Yantra
Yantra is an ancient and possibly innate technique of humanity to develop ourselves based out of pattern recognition and using intended shapes and patterns to give significance to a physical place or activity. A yantra is also a kind of archetype of nature or the highest faculties of nature. In it's most literal definition from it's sanskrit origins a Yantra means a tool, and in the case of geometric Yantra which are the subject of this page, a tool which is designed for the evolution of consciousness and the embodying of certain qualities or energies. As a human endeavor it is also this pattern recognition that had allowed us the ability to create all the tools we wield today.
Classic Indian yantra are typically constructed from circles, squares, and triangles which upon studying reveal a remarkable amount of interconnectivity and also connections to many other phenomenon of nature such as musical notes and other archetypal elements of nature such as the classic five elements of ether, air, fire, water, and earth. The most common and powerful element of the Yantra is the triangle which represents fire, transformation, dynamicism, and in the experience of general consciousness the roles of subject, object, and process of observation that creates the known universe. 3 is a magic number, and it takes 3. When talking about consciousness and the separation of ego, Three it seems is the first number that can have a manifest representation where as 2 is simply reflection of 1 and 1 is the summation of everything which in it's perfect balance becomes no-thing, making 2, as a principle of manifestation, opposite no-things.
Taking this into consideration one of the most powerful Yantra that can be observed and practiced with is known as Sri Yantra. Featuring an intricate interlocking of 9 triangles, 5 facing down and 4 facing up, to form 43 smaller triangles, it symbolizes balance and indeed the creation of every aspect of the Universe. Working with the Sri Yantra in gazing or meditation leads to energetic shifts that clear and expand ones perception and possibilities. For this reason is often called the fulfiller of all wishes, and the symbol of auspiciousness and abundance.
