Pavamana Mantra
This mantra is found in Brihadaranyaka Upanishads (1.3.28). It's meaning is beautifully simple and direct at conveying the sentiment of the spiritual sadhaka(practitioner). Pavamana means being purified, or strained. Pavamana is sometimes used synonymously for the word Soma, the purifying essence of realization and immortality. Soma has been considered to have a real physiological component, which is a hormone produced by the pineal gland, theorized only to be excreted during birth, death, and profound meditative experiences. This chemical, called N, N-Dimethyltryptamine is structurally similar to serotonin and melatonin, hormones that play large roles in ones state of consciousness, as well as mind altering chemicals from plants such as psilocybin mushrooms. N, N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is also found in many plants and is in high concentrations in plants used ritualistically by various cultures of the Amazon for healing and spiritual awakening.
