Maha Gāyatrī Mantra
Song of God
The Great Gayatri mantra is found in the Rig Veda and is said to have been revealed through meditation to Brahmarishi Vishvamitra. One interpretation for the meaning of gayatri is the combination of two words “gaya”(vital energy) and trâyate(preserve and liberate). Gayatri is the shortest form of meter for Vedic mantras, which consist of three (pada)lines of eight syllables each. The first line is considered an invocation of the planes of existence on which the mantra is intended to work. Another meaning of Gayatri is "Song of God", as the general sentiment of this chant is to connect to the infinite creative and compassionate nature of the creator through our adoration and efforts in meditation. Gayatri mantra expresses this through our relationship to the Sun with the line 'Tat Savitur Varenyam" Adoration of the sun, the bringer of light, and the divine consciousness in all of the existence.

Devata - Personification
Gayatri is considered as the mother of all knowledge and therefor it's devata incorporates aspects from all of the main Hindu devatas, such as; Shiva & Parvati, Vishnu & Saraswati, as well as Brahma & Lakshmi. These are compact symbols which represent the most essential and intrinsic functions of the existence. By aligning ones' mind to the concept that so much information can be represented in such a compact form can expand and break one free from the ego into the boundless cosmic sea of consciousness. |
